Every day I learn something new about Mad Max: Fury Road that continues to make me marvel and also further confirms my hankering suspicion that George Miller is a veritable lunatic (in the best possible way).
In an interview with NPR, Australian actress Melissa Jaffer, who is renowned in her home country and has appeared in many Australian films, states something remarkable about herself and the other actors who played that old lady biker gang (aka the Many Mothers, aka the Vuvalini ), which included the younger Valkyrie (Megan Gale):
They did their own stunts. Their own freakin’ stunts.
The 78-year-old Jaffer says she and the other actresses did their own stunts. “And I got feeling from a lot of the crew members that they didn’t think it was right women of my age to be doing that sort of thing. You know, sometimes they’d come up and say, oh, [George Miller] shouldn’t ask you to do that. And I would say why? And they’d say, well, because you’re an older woman. I did it, and I have to say, I enjoyed every minute of it.”
Holy motherf**kin s**t. For those who have seen the movie, I mean, do you recall some of those scenes? I mean, granted, it’s not as if they’re leaping over building rooftops like Jackie Chan or anything, but nevertheless make no mistake: them gals are doing fight scenes on moving vehicles. I could easily think of a half dozen things that could go wrong.
Just wow. I’m going to go see this movie yet again on this one little fact alone, just as a matter of principle. Hats off to Melissa Jaffer and the other tough ladies of Fury Road. And George Miller, you one crazy sonofabitch.
